Jerusalem-born Kutiman (Ophir Kutiel) grew up listening to classical and jazz music and playing piano, guitar and drums. It wasn’t until he was 18 and working at a convenience store in Tel Aviv that he discovered other genres of music and, soon after, the funky, soulful sounds of James Brown and Fela Kuti.
Various musical projects gained him some renown in Israel, but it wasn’t until his viral video opus, Thru You, began spreading in 2009 that Kutiman’s stature exploded worldwide (perhaps you’re one of the 2 million people already familiar with the series of clever, intricate video mashups he assembled).
[Kutiman is one of those rare artists whose music is appropriate across almost all of Conduit’s channels. GYSHIDO, TerraSonic, SoulTerrain, EasyRiser and Twilight for sure; maybe even Twang and Calmbience too. We invite you to take Conduit for a test drive and check it out for yourself. Since then, the prolific creator has produced Thru You Too (+ Remixes), Thru The City videos of Tokyo, Istanbul, Krakow and other major cities, earned awards and accolades for his unique work and put out 6am, a solid, cinematic, psychedelic soul record.
We regularly refer to musicians as artists — and rightfully so. Add in Kutiman’s visionary work in the video dimension, though, and we have someone who takes embodiment of the term to another level.
