#funkyfriday — Bob Destiny / "Wang Dang"

On this Funky Friday, we’ve got a real leftfield selection for you, friends. Once again, we’ve selected something by an artist — this time, Bob Destiny — about whom we’ve been able to dig up very little information. In this case, pretty much nothing.

The track is on the latest compilation from the Habibi Funk label: Habibi Funk 007: An Eclectic Selection of Music from the Arab World. The Berlin-based outfit has a passion for Arabic Funk, Jazz and other organic sounds from the 1970s and 1980s. Their eclectic catalog contains 20 records by artists from across the Arab world, and highlights how, even three to four decades ago, transcontinental musical cross-pollinations were already happening. There are glimpses, licks and elements of Arabic music running through all of it, but mostly these Habibi Funk comps are packed full of rock/funk blazers.

"Wang Dang," for example, is a soul-stirring, booty-bumping rager that’ll kick your Friday afternoon frenzy up several notches. It may be from half a world (and century) away, but there’s nothing foreign or “other” about it. Bob Destiny and his band clearly speak the universal language of getting down.

Dig in. And have a beautiful weekend.
